Understanding the Crowd-Pleaserâs Anxiety
A Crowd-Pleaserâs sense of self-worth is directly tied to the positive attention they receive from their community. Status, admiration, prestigeâthese are the Crowd-Pleaserâs crown jewels. When these are threatened, the Crowd-Pleaserâs anxiety comes out in full force, and they can think of little else.
ââââ
Crowd-Pleaser anxiety is triggered by:
Losing social standing (or the threat of it): This can come from scandal, like Carlyâs cheating accusation, or from loss of beauty, money, status symbols, position, etc.
Feeling left behind:They are strongly identified with a sense of belonging and keeping up with their perceived status. In order for Carly to âkeep up,â she needed to attend an Ivy League school.
Feeling Lonely: The prospect of being left out or missing out (FOMO!) ignites the Crowd-Pleaser's anxiety. Alice and Carly went to great lengths to maintain their position âin their crowd.â
Being left out: especially of something they were expecting to be included in or invited to, can easily send Crowd-Pleasers into a tailspin.
